This picture of me standing in front of the house in New Castle was taken in 1996.

Some things have changed since then - but much is still the same

A lovely home in a Beautiful county in SW Virginia!
There is nothing so dependable in life as change.  I moved into this lovely home in April 1990 with my children.

They graduated from high school, went on to college, got married, grand children are arriving (3 so far) and I have come to a time & place in my life that I need to move.  Actually, some health issues have surfaced this year (2009) and I am no longer able to keep up with this old place - and it is for sure more space than I need!

With this in mind, I have officially listed the house for sale with Barker Real Estate - for $190,000.
I have made many wonderful friends here in Craig County, and surrounding areas.  I have very much enjoyed my time here, my wonderful church family, my interesting dog-related friends.  I know I will miss much as I move to another location, but it is time.
This old house was originally built in 1854 - and has gone through several changes of ownership; several upgrades & renovations.  During the years we have lived here we have repaired things, replaced things.  In the last 10 years I have replaced the roof; done extensive re-wiring & re-plumbing; installed a full bath both upstairs and downstairs; insulated all the walls (as well as adding to insulation in the attic), and glass enclosed an upstairs side porch.  There are a/c units in the bedrooms - either in a window, or installed in the wall of the room.  There are telephone jacks in most rooms of the house.

The main house has a living room, dining room, kitchen, bath and guest bedroom on the first floor; three bedrooms and a bath on the 2nd floor.  On the far back end of the house, accessable from the back bedroom and/or from outside, a workshop / storage room - a very large room that any owner will find nice use of!   Below this workshop, accessable via a breezeway behind the kitchen, is a root cellar.  This room is in need of some work - but could be quite servicable in many ways.  You can see in the picture the front of the house is sheltered by a large porch that goes fully across the front & wraps around at one end; and there is another small porch upstairs, over the front door.  From the front porch(es) one can see straight down the road & into the town of New Castle, as well as beautiful mountain views.

In addition to the above, there is an outbuilding that may have been a smoke house at one time.  It is wired for electricty and there is a ceiling fan & light installed in it.  I have used it as an office for a short time.  It could also be fixed for a guest room, if so desired.

There are 2 carports + another metal storage building between the house & the road, to the side of the house.  Ivy graces a gazebo out from the kitchen door into the back yard - also lighted.
In my opinion, this house would make a great B&B if anyone knows of someone interested in something like this.  Or a convenient home for a family with several children.  If you know someone who is interested in history & antiques - this could be just the place for them!

I have done another 'page' that shows pictures of the inside of the main house.
